I design and make ceramics from my studio in Salford. I currently have 3 ranges which you can see on this website. I have a passion for developing my ideas in clay, particularly porcelain which gives a wonderful clarity to my distinctive aqua glaze. I try to capture the movement of the glaze during the firing, allowing it to form drips and glassy droplets that catch the light. My designs follow simple, clean forms with subtle decoration. To compliment the pure nature of porcelain, I incorporate other materials, such as twigs, grasses and ribbon. I am interested in the gradation of colours, asymmetrical lines and hidden spaces. I like to create miniature worlds inspired by my travels. I studied 3D Design at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in ceramics. After graduating, I spent five years travelling to many countries including Japan and Finland, which I chose because of their design and craft sensibilities. Whilst in Japan, I studied pottery and ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). I also visited many ancient kiln sites and ceramic centres. The Japanese have an understated style, consideration of materials and exact attention to detail that when combined creates an object of beauty. The Finns also share a deep understanding of natural materials and how to work with them to form honest intelligent products. After returning to my hometown of Manchester, I began designing and making again and established my ceramic studio in 2006 at Islington Mill, Salford. |
