'I am a Lancashire based potter. I was born in Salford, and continue to live and work there. I make hand thrown decorative porcelain objects and curiosities.
My designs follow simple, clean forms with subtle decoration. My distinctive aqua glaze has a clear bright translucent quality which crazes giving an added dimension to the work. Each piece is unique and has its own character. To compliment the pure nature of porcelain, I like to incorporate other materials, such as twigs, grasses and ribbon. I design and make everything myself including my trademark aqua glaze. I am interested in the gradation of colours, asymmetrical lines and hidden spaces.
I studied 3D Design at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in ceramics. After graduating, I spent five years travelling to many countries including Japan and Finland, whose design and craft sensibilities I admire.
Whilst in Japan, I studied pottery and visited many ancient kiln sites and ceramic centres. I also practiced ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. The Japanese have an understated style, consideration of materials and exact attention to detail that when combined creates an object of beauty. The Finns have a deep love and understanding for the purity of nature and share the Japanese love of expressing this through design that is honest and simple. I hope to capture some of this essence in my work.
